thin div topAmong the questions people tend to ask me about belly dance is "Can it really help me lose weight?"
My answer is emphatically YES! It can...

It's right about this time that I pull up a photo of me taken a just a few years ago (2009). I was over the 295lb. mark back then – and that wasn't even close to what topped the scales at when I was my heaviest. As you can see in the 2nd photo – I have lost a significant amount of weight. (162lbs all together so far). I attribute this to my belly dancing, because although I am eating healthier, I haven't been counting calories, starving myself, or doing the diet thing.

It won't be instantaneous
It took you years to pack the weight on
But only takes a short time to begin taking it off again

As of January 2016 - I only have 24 lbs more to lose to be at my goal weight of 140 lbs. When I reach it I will post another photo here.

I started taking belly dance as a means of physical therapy (following spinal surgery to repair injuries to my spine from a serious automobile accident occurring early in 2002) Injuries that had left me unable to walk for two years! Medications & inactivity helping contribute to my hefty size / weight. When insurance would no longer cover physical therapy – my therapist recommended belly dance as a low impact alternative (touting it's ability to assist with balance, flexibility, and physical stamina)


I have students taking classes with me now specifically because I teach Belly Dance from the perspective of getting healthy & fit (vs. just being sexy, which by the way - is yet another benefit of belly dance). I don't know, maybe it's the sparkly costumes, maybe it's the increased confidence, grace, and feminity that gets rediscovered along the way. Whatever it is - it works!
